Kramer LLP Adds Electrical Engineer and Patent Litigator Michael Swett to New York Office

October 26, 2026

Former DLA Piper and Dentons partner brings two decades of combined engineering and patent experience to the firm’s growing team

Kramer LLP, the patent litigation firm delivering elevated legal solutions for inventors and patent owners, announced that attorney Michael Swett has joined the firm in its New York City office. A former practicing electrical engineer and registered patent attorney, Swett brings deep technical fluency in networking, semiconductors, machine learning, data transmission, video and other technologies, along with extensive experience working on high-stakes patent litigations involving some of the world’s largest technology companies.

Swett holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Washington, with a concentration in embedded systems. Before entering the law, he worked as an electrical engineer at Gray & Osborne, Inc., designing electrical distribution systems and high-reliability control systems. That hands-on engineering foundation shapes how he approaches every matter: circuit designs, reading source code, and technical specifications with the eye of a skilled practitioner, and translating complex technology into clear, persuasive arguments for judges, juries, and the Patent Office.

Over a career where he practiced at top-tier large firms – Morrison & Foerster, Dentons, Dorsey & Whitney, and DLA Piper – Swett has developed keen insight analyzing infringement and invalidity issues, developing claim construction arguments and strategies, as well as working with technical expert witnesses, and has argued oral hearings in patent matters. In addition to his litigation experience, he also has significant experience in the Patent Office, and he has advised clients on portfolio monetization, licensing, IP due diligence, and pre-litigation investigations.

Swett earned his J.D., cum laude, from Seattle University School of Law, with an emphasis in intellectual property. He is admitted to practice in New York, California, and Washington State, and is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He was formerly a partner at Dentons and DLA Piper and he joins Kramer LLP from a DLA Piper spin out, where he was also a partner.

“We are thrilled to welcome Mike to Kramer LLP,” said Rob Kramer, Managing Partner. “Patent cases are won by lawyers who truly understand the technology, and Mike is an engineer first. He has designed electrical systems, written and prosecuted hundreds of patents, and worked on patent litigation trial teams in some of the most significant technology cases in the country. His technical acumen and litigation experience reinforce our ability to deliver elevated legal solutions to inventors and patent owners, and his arrival in New York strengthens the depth we bring to clients on the East Coast.”

“Kramer LLP has built its reputation on combining technical rigor with trial experience on behalf of the people who create and own innovation,” said Swett. “I’m excited to bring my technical background and litigation experience to a team so focused on helping patent owners protect and enforce their inventions.”
