Michael Swett
Michael Swett is a former practicing electrical engineer and registered patent attorney who brings deep technical fluency in networking, semiconductors, machine learning, data transmission, video and other technologies to the Kramer LLP team, along with extensive experience working on high-stakes patent litigations involving some of the world’s largest technology companies.
Swett holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Washington, with a concentration in embedded systems. Before entering the law, he worked as an electrical engineer at Gray & Osborne, Inc., designing electrical distribution systems and high-reliability control systems. That hands-on engineering foundation shapes how he approaches every matter: circuit designs, reading source code, and technical specifications with the eye of a skilled practitioner, and translating complex technology into clear, persuasive arguments for judges, juries, and the Patent Office.
Over a career where he practiced at top-tier large firms – Morrison & Foerster, Dentons, Dorsey & Whitney, and DLA Piper – Swett has developed keen insight analyzing infringement and invalidity issues, developing claim construction arguments and strategies, as well as working with technical expert witnesses, and has argued oral hearings in patent matters. In addition to his litigation experience, he also has significant experience in the Patent Office, and he has advised clients on portfolio monetization, licensing, IP due diligence, and pre-litigation investigations.
He was formerly a partner at Dentons and DLA Piper and he joins Kramer LLP from a DLA Piper spin out, where he was also a partner.
