Safraz Ishmael
Safraz Ishmael is a seasoned litigator with more than two decades of courtroom experience representing clients in high-stakes patent and trade secret disputes. At Kramer LLP, he partners with universities, technology companies, and other innovators to protect their most valuable intellectual property and to pursue strategic, high‑impact enforcement actions against infringers.
Before joining Kramer LLP, Safraz was a partner at global defense firm DLA Piper, where he represented many of the world’s leading technology companies. Drawing on that deep insight into sophisticated defense strategies, he now leverages his experience to develop forward‑looking, plaintiff‑side litigation strategies that level the playing field for innovators asserting their intellectual property rights.
With a master’s degree in physics and a bachelor’s degree in computer science, Safraz brings a rare combination of technical fluency and jury trial experience. He quickly distills complex scientific concepts into compelling narratives that resonate with judges, juries, and other decision‑makers. He represents clients in federal courts nationwide, before the U.S. International Trade Commission, and in inter partes review proceedings at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
Safraz has led matters involving a wide range of technologies, including:
- AI‑driven and software‑based systems
- Cellular and wireless communications standards
- Advanced medical devices, biomedical implants, and surgical systems
- Life science diagnostics and point‑of‑care technologies
- Semiconductors, fiber optics, and human computer interface technologies
- Digital data compression and graphics processing
- Technology standards such as WiFi-6, ATSC, MPEG-2, H.264, among many others
Recognized for both his strategic judgment and his ability to guide client teams through complex disputes, Safraz has been named to Best Lawyers in America every year from 2019–2026. He has also been honored as a “Minority Powerbroker” by Law360 and a “Rising Star” by Super Lawyers. His insights have been featured in publications including the Boston Globe, Boston Business Journal, National Law Journal, Law360, IP Frontline, and Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly.
